KeNHA Recommends Alternative Routes Following Heavy Traffic

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has advised drivers to avoid the Nairobi-Nakuru highway so as to escape the traffic jam on the route.

KeNHA Recommends Alternative Routes Following Heavy Traffic

KeNHA said that it was resolving the issue round-the-clock and the incident was caused by a traffic accident close to a rail on the road bridge at Gilgil causing the congestion at the Northern Corridor between Naivasha and Nakuru.

In addition, they advised motorists to stay away from the route until the problem has been rectified and to use alternate routes. They also warned drivers against overlapping and aggravating the situation.

"Further to our earlier advisory, motorists planning to travel between Nairobi and Nakuru are advised to use Flyover-Njabini-Olkalou-Lanet or Naivasha-Olkalou Lanet routes," KeNHA said on Saturday.

"Trucks are advised to delay their travels until the situation eases at Gilgil. Every effort is being made to enable traffic to start flowing."

According to reports, the traffic snarl-up began at Gilgil weighbridge at around 7 pm and extended to today, early morning.

The overnight traffic night on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway forced hundreds of motorists to spend the night on the road, stranded in the jam.

In order to avoid the traffic, several passengers even opted to walk to their destinations and forego public transportation.

Large trucks that were utilizing the weighbridge were blamed by some road users, who urged the police and traffic authorities to take action.

Police were called in to manage the issue to see that motorists maintain lane discipline.
