KeNHA Tells Pedestrians To Use Waiyaki Way Footbridge

The Kenya National Highways Authority(KeNHA) has called on pedestrians along Waiyaki Way to use the footbridge at Aga Khan Secondary School.

KeNHA Tells Pedestrians To Use Waiyaki Way Footbridge

KeNHA responded to an online video showing pupils from Muguga Green Primary school crossing the 8-lane highway.

The video has caused outrage on social media as the students are forced to run from one end of the road to the other, jumping over the road rails that separate oncoming and outgoing vehicles before eventually crossing across to the other side.

The crossing point, which also serves as a drop-off and pick-up location for Public Service Vehicles (PSVs), is between the Nairobi West Expressway entrance and the Westlands Sub County Commissioner's office.

A senior manager at KeNHA said it’s wrong for pedestrians to endanger their lives, yet there is a footbridge just a few meters away outside Safaricom House and Aga khan High School.

"There is a footbridge 500 meters from the crossing, but it appears the students are reverting to the older format where there were marshals controlling the traffic," the manager said.

As one approaches the Expressway, the route from ABC Place has been widened to eight lanes. However, only a few pedestrians use the footbridge to cross the vast road, with the majority jumping over guard barriers.

“A joint visit is arranged with NTSA for sensitization to the school and pedestrians. A safety audit is also underway to improve user experience," the official said. "We will have marshals to guide to a safe crossing,” added the manager.
