Kenya Apologizes to Ugandan Government.

Following the assassination of three geologists and two soldiers in Turkana county in February this year, the government has extended an apology to Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and his administration.

According to reports, the geologists were collecting soil samples near the Kenya-Uganda border when they were confronted by armed pastoralists.

Following the incident, Museveni's administration prohibited Turkana pastoralists from grazing in Kobebe, Uganda, affecting the majority of the county's pastoralists.

Former Petroleum Cabinet Secretary John Munyes conveyed Kenya's regret for the event during a meeting between the Kenyan and Ugandan delegations on Wednesday, April 6. He also pleaded with Museveni's government to forgive Kenya.

Given the country's drought, he encouraged the Ugandan side to allow pastoralists to continue grazing on Ugandan land.

If it was not for Uganda, Turkana cows would have been finished by now and that is why we are pleading with Uganda to allow the Turkana to return and graze their livestock in Karamoja,” stated Munyes.

Yacob Tirop, the Deputy County Commissioner of Lokiriama, also returned weapons confiscated from the deceased Ugandan soldiers.

Tirop went on to say that Kenyan security services were still investigating the incident and that the offenders would be brought to justice

The Ugandan team, commanded by Brigadier Joseph Balikudembe, indicated that Kenya must meet additional requirements before pastoralists can graze in Uganda.

“You have not handed us the guns that they used for killing our soldiers and suspects. Even one of our guns had 120 ammunition but you have handed us an empty magazine. Where are the bullets?

We can’t answer your request right now for the Turkana to come back to Uganda because first of all, you have only handed over to us the guns that the Turkana took from our soldiers after killing them," Balikudembe stated.
