Kitale Catholic Diocese Bishop Maurice Anthony Crowley has hit out at the government over Covid-19 restrictions imposed on places of worship.

The clergy notes that it beats logic that the government has allowed bars and other social places to resume operations as well as public transport, yet the church is still asked not to allow full capacity of members.

Speaking at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Nandi Hills, Bishop Crowley said places o worship should also be allowed to resume their operations like other sectors.

“We now have a problem because they (the government) has restricted worship but they have allowed Chang’aa and Busaa dens to continue as usual, but in the place of God there is a limit,” the Bishop lamented.

Currently, places of worship are allowed to accept only up to a third of the total number of worshippers due to Covid-19 protocols still in force.

The government has however allowed matatus to resume carrying capacity passengers, with clubs, bars, and other social places also open and witnessing a disregard in following the restrictions.

But even as Bishop Crowley laments about churches not being opened, he expressed the need for Kenyans to continue observing restrictions that have been outlined by the government in a bid to curb the spread of the pandemic.

He noted that Covid-19 was still within the community, revealing that the pandemic has been claiming at least one Catholic priest across the country weekly.

“Some say there is no Covid-19 but I want you to know that at least one priest has been dying every week from the pandemic here in Kenya,’ said the Kitale Catholic Diocese Bishop.
