Police were among the first responders on the accident scene, sealing off the area and rescueing the victims of the accident.

"The accident has occasioned that stretch of the road to be completely blocked as the police conduct rescue operations," KeNHA stated.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) confirmed the accident and posted images which indicated that the tanker may have collided with a lorry and pushed it to the side of the road.

Some car parts appeared to have fallen into Chania Falls while others were dispersed throughout the road, impeding traffic from both sides.

One of the images showed a trailer veering off the road and colliding with a signpost.

The guard rails were damaged and the chassis of one of the vehicle was hanging on the guard rails, additionally, oil from the tanker has spilled on the congested road.

The cause of the accident is yet to be determined and the number of fatalities are yet to be known.

"Motorists are to exercise caution and lane discipline as the scene is being cleared. Overlapping will lead to snarl-ups and cause unnecessary delays," KeNHA advised.

Meanwhile, between Mai Mahiu and Naivasha another collision involving two trailer trucks occurred and the trucks caught fire which was quickly put out as police managed the flow of traffic.
