CAF Super Cup: Al Ahly beat Renaissance Berkane to lift Super Cup trophy.

Egyptian giants Al Ahly defeated Renaissance Berkane of Morocco 2-0 to claim their 21st African title in a match played in Doha, Qatar on Friday.

Mohamed Sherif and Salah Mohsen scored in the second half to give Al Ahly their seventh Super Cup title, whose nine titles in the African Champions League makes them the continent’s most successful team.

Striker Sherif hammered a left-foot shot past goalkeeper Zouhair Laaroubi into the far corner of the net on the 57th minute.

Ahly got their winning goal in the 82nd minute when substitute Mohsen rounded off Laaroubi before firing in a shot into an empty net.

The win for coach Pitson Mosimane’s side has ended a run of humiliations in the Super Cup with Champions League title-holders Esperance of Tunisia losing the 2019 and 2020 matches, also in Qatar.

The South African has now won four CAF competitions, one less than the most successful African, Tunisian Faouzi Benzarti.

Ahly qualified for the Super Cup by defeating Zamalek in the 2020 Champions League final, while Berkane booked their place with after defeating Pyramids of Egypt in the Confederation Cup final.

The CAF Super Cup is annual African competition contested by the winners of CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup. It was first held in 1993.
