Abdi Hussein Ahmed, also known as Abu Khadi, was captured on Tuesday at a rental property in Maua, Meru County, after locals provided information via the DCI's anonymous tip line.

The governments of Kenya and the United States offered a USD 2 million reward in late May for information that might result in the capture of Ahmed and Badru Abdul Aziz Saleh.

Ahmed was sought in the US along with his alleged accomplices Moazu Kromah, Amara Cherif, and Mansur Mohamed Suru for their alleged involvement in a scheme to smuggle rhinoceros’ horns and elephant tusks worth more than USD 7 million (roughly Ksh. 833.4 million) on various occasions between December 2012 and May 2019.

They were said to have operated out of Uganda, where they smuggled at least 10 tons of ivory and 190 kg of rhinoceros horns from several East African countries to the United States and Southeast Asia.

DCI claims that over 100 elephants and more than 35 rhinos have perished as a result of the multinational criminal business.

The two were charged with allegedly smuggling heroin into the United States and wildlife out of Kenya and Uganda for international markets.
