According to a source privy to Bright Kenya news, the watchman termed as the witness in the case had lost his ID at Royal Gardens Park estate in Lang’ata, where journalist Maribe and Jowie  Irungu were staying at the time.

The witness identified as Dominic Hosea revealed to Justice Grace Nzioka that his ID went missing under unexplained circumstances after he left it with a security officer at the Royal Gardens Park complex.

He also added to the court that on September 17, 2018, they had visited the place with a friend where they were looking for a part-time job, and the guard at the entrance instructed them to leave their identification cards behind.

The security guard did not return his ID when they were leaving the estate, and he was alerted that it was missing. The guard at the gate instructed him to come back the next day and check.

“He told me he was not the one on duty in the morning and asked me to come the next day. The next day, September 18, we returned to Lang’ata and found the same guard,” he testified.

“I said that I did not get my ID. I informed him of my name and ID number. He said they could not trace it but they would look for it," the witness added.

Ironically, following Monica Kimani's death on September 19, 2018, authorities discovered the ID card at her home in Lemuria Gardens, Kilimani.

When Hosea returned to work, detectives from the Kilimani police station arrived to his workplace and arrested him.

“I was taken to the office, asked my identity and details. I explained to them what happened and that my ID got lost at Royal Park Lang’ata. I told them the security guard had assured me they would find it,” Hosea told the court.
