The wage increase is the result of an agreement between the media house and the Kenya Union of Journalists, according to a local outlet (KUJ). A Collective Bargaining Agreement is said to have been signed by the two (CBA).

“We will now start to update pay for the September payroll and will backdate any increases to 1 August,” the memo read in part.

This agreement comes in handy at a time amid the Covid-19 pandemic, journalists have been subjected to tough working conditions with some laid off and others forced to take salary deductions failure to which some are being fired.

However, KUJ is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the working circumstances of journalists.

In the media industry, the organization also protects and promotes media independence, professionalism, and ethical standards.

Members work as freelancers, journalists and reporters, editors, subeditors, and photographers in the sector.
