Secondary School Teachers To Be Trained On CBC

On April 5, Tuesday, the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) announced new training for secondary school teachers countrywide.

Secondary School Teachers To Be Trained On CBC

The TSC CEO Nancy Macharia told education stakeholders that the training was targeted at equipping teachers with abilities in teaching the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) ahead of Grade Six pupils' transition to Junior High School in 2023.

According to Macharia, the training will benefit 60,000 instructors and will be totally supported by the government for public school teachers. The instructors will be trained by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD).

"The commission has planned for 60,000 teachers in April to prepare them for Junior Secondary Schools in CBC with effect from April 25. This is immediately after the marking of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations," she stated.

She further revealed that instructors will be taught in certain subjects as outlined in the CBC.

"Teachers will be trained in specific learning areas in languages, pure sciences, applied sciences, mathematics, humanities, and technical subjects," the Macharia added.

The Cabinet Secretary for Education, George Magoha, told stakeholders that the elections would not disrupt the training, and that his Ministry was committed to ensuring a smooth transition of the pioneer CBC class to High School.

After their national assessment in November 2022, the Grade Six class will transfer to selected Junior Secondary Schools in January 2023.

According to Akelo Misori, Secretary-General of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), the training would only be effective if more resources are dedicated to teacher recruitment.
