Several families are counting losses running into millions of shillings after a tree fell onto their vehicles during a weekend retreat in Naivasha, Nakuru County.

In what was supposed to be a long weekend for merrymaking and bonding was turned into tears for the families following the incident at Camp Carnelley’s on the shores of Lake Naivasha.

During the Sunday evening incident, at least five cars were destroyed and one man was seriously injured after the acacia tree was uprooted by strong winds.

The injured man was rushed to hospital in serious but stable condition as the affected car owners and the hotel management moved in to assess the damages.

Naivasha sub-county deputy commissioner Mutua Kisilu confirmed that strong winds forced the aging acacia tree to collapse forcing tens of revelers who had camped at the hotel to flee for their safety.

“One person was injured during the incident and five cars were extensively damaged during the incident,” he said.

A visitor, Simon Ouma said that he and his family were having a meal in the hotel when the giant tree crashed causing anxiety and fear.

“There was a loud sound of something falling on the ground and on checking we found that an acacia tree had crushed on the trees,” he said.

He added that one person who had gone to collect some effects from his car was injured by the falling tree and rushed to hospital.

And in the nearby Duro village in the Moi Ndabi area, over 50 families were forced to spend the night in the cold following flash-floods that hit the area.

A private school and several shops were affected following heavy rains that pounded the nearby areas of Eburru forest leading to the flash floods.

The deputy commissioner confirmed the incident adding that no lives were lost through the floods caused extensive damage.

“The flash floods caught the families by surprise flooding their homes and the trading center and the security team is accessing the situation,” he said.

In the last couple of days, Naivasha town and its environs have recorded heavy rains with the met department projecting more rains in the coming days.
