Al-Shabaab Returnee Seeking Amnesty Is Due For Reintegration Into The Society

Roble Musa Yerow, a returnee, is to be sent to the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC) in Nairobi, as per Mandera Senior Resident Magistrate, Mukabi Kimani.

On March 11, Yerow is said to have snuck out of the terror group's camp in Somalia and returned to Kenya after being recruited by his elder brother, Abdifatah Musa Yerow, in 2020

“He has informed us that he sneaked out of the terror cell after failing to get what he was promised when he joined the group,” the officer said.

A family member and a local government administrator handed him over to security agents.

“The respondent is a returnee seeking amnesty and he has been cooperative with the security agencies. We are seeking to have him moved to ATPU and NCTC headquarters in Nairobi for reintegration,” Mr Nyandega told the court in an affidavit.

The police claimed they were transporting Yerow to Nairobi for his own safety because Al-Shabaab fighters were pursuing him. They said the ATPU office in Mandera lacks the necessary skills to reintegrate the al-Shabab returnee.

Mr. Nyandega further insisted on the importance or reintegration.

“Reintegration is crucial not only to prevent acts of violence but also to mitigate further radicalization among the youthful population and building…,” he stated

Since the amnesty was declared in 2014, records in Mandera suggest that Yerow is the only terror suspect who has surrendered to the government.
