Kenya's electoral body (IEBC) Chair Wafula Chebukati has vehemently cursed a situation in which a returning officer was intimidated and assaulted during Matungu by-election, in Kakamega County today.

Addressing the press when he visited one of the voting centres in Naivasha, Chebukati insisted that the character must pay for his actions. In the clip that has since gone viral, ex-Sports CS Rashid Echesa has been captured slapping the officer.

"...I urge the police to apprehend the culprit and due process to follow," stated the IEBC boss. He further added that today's by-elections were full of peace with Matungu and London Ward being the only exceptions.

Chebukati further stated that it was pointless for political party agents going allover voting centres claiming that they are overseeing voting.

The Chair reiterated that the commission will ensure no voting fraudulence, at the same time calling upon all doing the voting exercise to ensure strict adherence to the Covid-19 protocols.
