Contractor Arrested Over The Collapsed Kisumu Storey Building

The contractor, whose name has not been released to the public, was arrested on Monday, September 13, and is being held at Kondele Police Station, according to Kisumu police.

His arrest occurred at a time when the owner of the collapsed building fled to unknown locations, fearful of the uniformed officers. However, the officers are yet to trace his whereabouts.

He was arrested just hours after the building he was overseeing collapsed, killing three people [two men and one woman}, and wounding many more.

Officers from the Kenya Red Cross and the Kisumu County administration rescued several people who were trapped in the rubble.

The bodies of the deceased were later moved to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.

Reports from Eyewitnesses stated that the structure was a ticking time bomb due to massive fissures.

On the other hand, Eng. Amos Musau, the Regional Coordinator of the National Construction Authority (NCA), said the authority issued the building's owner a notice to close the site in August 2020 for failing to follow building regulations.

However, the contractor is set to be arraigned in court on Tuesday, September 14 this year.
