The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) reported in a statement on Friday that the operation was carried out between Sarira and Kolbio areas within the stated forest.

"On July 1, 2022, Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops carried out an operation between Sarira and Kolbio areas within the expansive Boni forest.

"During the operation, 10 newly graduated Al Shabaab terrorists were killed as others escaped with multiple injuries," the statement reads in parts.

According to the KDF, the terrorist group had planned to conduct assaults along the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor.

During the operation, one Rocket Propelled Grenade launcher (RPG), many assault guns, a variety of rounds of ammunition, and personal items were found.

According to the KDF, its troops have been actively involved in a number of operations along the border regions to thwart further attacks by the extremist group with headquarters in Somalia.

Four months ago, during a gunfight in the same location, KDF forces killed four Al-Shabaab fighters.

In order to prevent the Somalia-based terrorist group from carrying out strikes in the nation, the KDF claimed that security had been boosted in the seaside town.

“KDF troops under Operation Amani Boni, have intensified patrols in the locality and will continue, along with other security agencies and support from local residents, to pacify the area in a bid to get rid of Al Shabaab terrorists,” KDF said in February

Since Kenya began a military effort against the militant group in Somalia ten years ago, the country has been the primary target of Shabaab strikes.
