Daniel Kimani and two other suspects, Mokoya Musioma and Hussein Abdalla Mohamed, escaped from the basement cells of the Mombasa law courts on Monday evening, hours after being accused of robbery with violence.

According to police sources, the three escaped through unoccupied courtrooms after removing a rusty bar from the bottom of the grille door.

The police say that Kimani allegedly assaulted policewoman Saadia Abdi, who works at the Makupa police station, on Tuesday morning last week.

Abdi was on his way to connect to work at a matatu stage when she was attacked at 5.30 a.m. by the bandit who stole her Persian blue police tunic and other valuables.

Kimani was apprehended in the Magongo Mwisho district of Changamwe on Sunday night following a crackdown by a special team of police officers.

The officers discovered Abdi's police number on his police uniform while investigating his home.

He and the other two suspects were apprehended and transferred to Changamwe police station, and on Monday, a Mombasa court charged them with robbery with violence.

However, the three suspects were missing from the basement cells as police officials prepared to return them to the police station later that evening.

“It was reported by the officer in charge of Mombasa court, Orderly Sergeant Robert Musee, that the three prisoners, who were in custody in the underground cells within the court premises had escaped by first sliding underneath the raised cell doors,” the police report read.
