VIDEO: Shock as Guards at Likoni Ferry Filmed Receiving Bribe to Give Passage

Guards at Likoni bridge have shocked netizens on Social media after a video of them receiving bribes from innocent Kenyans went viral on Tuesday 15th February.

From the video seen by Bright Kenya News , the guards can be seen collecting coins of money alleged to be Ksh. 10 and Ksh 20 from the commuters around trying to cross the barricaded area.

The commuters can be heard issueing money but complining due to the tough economic times.

Security officials, including Kenya police, the General Service Unit, Kenya Coast Guard Services, and private security guards, have been deployed to control crowds at the Likoni channel, which is one of the most dangerous areas on the Coast due to the high volume of passengers, since the coronavirus outbreak.

In 2021 March,an announcement was made  by Kenya Ferry Service (KFS) that all pedestrians were to use the floating foot bridge at Liwatoni.

“From tomorrow, you must use the floating bridge and only vehicles will be allowed to use the ferries while crossing,” the announcer said.

The pedestrians were expected to use the floating bridge, which operates between 6am and 8am and from 4.30pm to 7pm.

In 2020, the government built the bridge for Sh1.9 million to relieve crowding at Likoni Channel in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

The Likoni Ferry Channel is utilized by roughly 350,000 passengers and 6,000 vehicles on a daily basis, resulting in high traffic, especially during peak hours in the morning and evening.
