Woman Given 50-Year Prison Term for Trafficking Heroin and Cocaine

A 47-year-old woman was found guilty of drug trafficking and given a 50-year prison term for two counts of drug trafficking by a Shanzu court, Mombasa County.

Zainab Abdi was brought before Shanzu Senior Principal Magistrate David Odhiambo and charged with two counts of drug trafficking.

The magistrate mentioned that the prosecution's evidence was from intelligence sources that the defendant was involved in the drug trade and had been hiding drugs in her home.

"They then planned a search where they recovered drugs under her bed and some hanging on the wall. The said substances were produced in court as evidence and the government analyst confirmed that the whitish substance tested positive for cocaine, while the brownish substance tested positive for heroin," he noted.

The magistrate disclosed that additional evidence had been presented to the court, including a black silver handbag with a small black bag inside.

He also stated that he was not persuaded by the accused's defense that the items could have been hidden and planted in the accused's home with the intention of framing her.

"The accused person while giving her sworn testimony came out to be untrustworthy. l have considered her defense and l find that she had failed to dislodge the prosecution case. The prosecution case remains steadfast," Odhiambo added.

Zainab was given a 25-year prison term by for the first count of trafficking 303.3 grams of cocaine with a market value of Ksh1,213,200 in Soliani.

She was given an additional 25years in prison for a second count of trafficking 76.7 grams of heroin with an estimated street value of Ksh 230,100.

"Having analyzed the testimonies and evidence of the prosecution witnesses and considered the submissions by the prosecution and the defense the court found out that prosecution has established a prima facie case against the accused the sentence should run co- currently," the magistrate said.

The suspect was also mandated by the court to pay fines totaling Ksh 3,626,300 for the first count and Ksh 690,600 for the second count.

She was then given 14 days to file an appeal.
