The Channel, which has over three million users, was taken over by a group running a digital currency known as Cryptocurrency, who renamed it Ethereum (US).

For a brief period, the hackers also controlled some of the content uploaded to the Citizen TV YouTube channel. The TV’s online viewers were taken aback when the hackers live-streamed a conversation about digital money.

Citizen TV was able to reclaim control of its channel and all of its programs from the page. But Citizen TV and Ethereum have not issued a statement regarding the incident as of publication

Before the hacking, the channel was known as Kenya Citizen TV, but it has since been changed to Citizen TV.

Among other Kenyan sites that have been hacked before include content creator Diana Marua’s YouTube channel

“I have lived at peace with everyone, and I have always stayed on my lane; I don’t know why anyone would do this to me! You hack my YouTube Account; Change the name, and even worse, you delete it, fam,” Marua posted on her Instagram.

Late last year, the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) Facebook account got hacked by cybercriminals, but after a few days, they recovered control of the page.

"We wish to inform the members of the public that our Facebook page has been temporarily hacked, and we are working towards resolving the issue," ODPP had informed the public.
