The incoming Chief Justice Martha Koome has been sworn in as the next Kenya's chief justice.

She has become Kenya’s 15th Chief Justice, and the third under the 2010 Constitution. In addition, she has become first Kenya`s female Chief Justice. 

Martha Koome and William Ouko have taken the oath of office as Chief Justice and Supreme Court judge, respectively, in a ceremony conducted at State House Nairobi.

Martha Koome`s swearing-in comes days after President Uhuru Kenyatta had appointed her as the next Kenya's Chief justice on Wednesday 19th.

However, this was after her nomination was approved by the National assembly.

The President made the announcement in a gazette notice dated May 19, 2021.

“I, Uhuru Kenyatta, President and Commander in Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, appoint- Martha Karambu Koome to be the Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya.”

Chief Justice Koome has taken over the seat that was left by Former Chief Justice David Kenani Maraga after his term ended in early 2021. 

Ex- Kenya's CJ Maraga was the 14th chief justice and president of the Supreme Court of Kenya from October 2016 till his retirement in January 2021.
