The outrage lasted for about six hours.

According to Facebook company, the cause was a faulty configuration change.

This is because all three services are owned by Facebook and could not be accessed over the web or on smartphone apps.

With 10.6 million trouble complaints from around the world, Downdetector, a company that tracks outages, said it was the greatest failure it had ever seen.

Users were able to access the sites about 22:00 GMT after the services went down around 16:00 GMT.

Facebook said in a statement on Tuesday that the improper configuration modification impacted the company's internal tools and processes, complicating efforts to remedy the issue.

Some users reported issues with Facebook's virtual reality headset platform, Oculus, and apps that require Facebook logins, such as Pokémon Go, which were also affected.
