FINA Bans Kenya From All Swimming Competitions Indefinitely

Kenya has been barred from all Fina-related events, according to a letter addressed to John Ohaga, the head of the Sports Dispute Tribunal (SDT), and signed by Fina's head of legal, Loic Loutan.

FINA Bans Kenya From All Swimming Competitions Indefinitely

FINA is the international federation recognized by the International Olympic Committee for administering international competitions in water sports.

Kenya has been suspended for the past two years after failing to hold elections for the previous three years. The ban was approved by the Fina executive at a meeting last week.

"The country can't take part and benefit from any Fina-related program and funding. The country will not also nominate candidates for elections/appointments to any Fina offices or positions (bureau, committees, or other Fina bodies)," read the letter.

Loutan, on the other hand, added that Kenyan swimmers are free to compete as neutrals, as Russian athletes did last year when they competed under the Olympic flag in Tokyo.

“Kenyan nationalities can continue to compete in Fina events or Fina sanctioned events, provided they are registered on their own behalf and they meet all other Fina rules and requirements. Their international representation will be under the banner Fina athletes,” stated Loutan.

He stated that two Kenyan swimmers, Swaleh Taib and Luchia Ruchti, have been entered for the upcoming World Championships in Budapest next month and will be the only Kenyan athletes competing.

"They are the only athletes from Kenyan entitled to compete in Budapest as IFA, accompanied by their respective team officials.  Proof of payments and carried out directly by the two concerned athletes and not through  KSF must be produced," stated Loutan.

The KSF elections were scheduled for last year following the adoption of a new constitution, but some members of the Interim Management Committee (IMC) filed a lawsuit to prevent them, citing universal suffrage. Attempts to get a response from Ohaga were futile.
