IPOA Initiates Probe Into Masimba Shooting

IPOA said in a press release on Friday that a rapid reaction team has been formed to look into the deaths of four people and the injuries of others that were allegedly caused by police actions.

The team is preparing to gather material that may be useful in determining the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

“On completion of the investigations, where fault is found, the Authority shall make recommendations, including but not limited to prosecution. IPOA remains committed to being independent, impartial, and fair,” it said.

Locals staged a protest in response to an upsurge in wildlife attacks in the area. They had barricaded the road for hours, cutting off the transportation routes and leaving vehicles and transporters stranded.

The demonstrations were held to show dissatisfaction with the national government about unsolved human-wildlife conflict in the area that had resulted in eight deaths in three months, the most recent victim being a teacher killed a week earlier.

After sustaining gunshot wounds in a standoff between police officers drawn from the elite GSU police unit and protestors on Thursday, three individuals died on the scene while another was confirmed dead at a local hospital.

Other citizens were hurt as a result of the incident, which occurred in Masimba area.
