On Sunday, the Malkia Strikers were overwhelmed in their opening match, losing three sets to zero to reigning champions Cameroon.

The record nine-time champions, on the other hand, made atonement by thrashing the Democratic Republic of Congo in the same sets.

The victory is a tremendous relief for coach Paul Bitok, who despite playing an injury-plagued team with captain Mercy Moim starting from the bench, was able to defeat the Congolese by scores of 25-11, 25-12, and 25-19.
