Police Officer Detained For Allegedly Raping A Suspect Inside The Cell

In Mogotio, Baringo County, a police officer is currently being held by police after reportedly raping a suspect in a holding cell in late April.

The complaint leading to his arrest came from a 23-year-old woman who was being held at the Mogotio police station after being charged with child neglect in an Eldama Ravine Court.

According to a police report, the officer was accused of raping the victim at around 9 p.m. on April 27, 2022, while he was on night duty.

“The accuser was being held at the station as from Tuesday, April 26 as a remandee for the offence of child neglect, awaiting children's office report at the Eldama Ravine court on May 4,” stated the police report.

The court had ordered that she be remanded pending a report from the Mogotio sub-county children's office.

According to Joseph Mumira, the Baringo County criminal investigations officer in charge, the officer was detained when the woman reported him to his female colleague the morning following the incident.

The woman and the suspect were taken to Mogotio Sub-County Hospital for medical evaluations. Mumira said the samples were gathered from the two and sent for testing as the police investigated the occurrence.

“The officer is currently being held at the Mogotio Police Station awaiting to be taken to court. His file was forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for directions on the charges,”  Mumira said.

The Suspect will be tried in court on Wednesday, May 4, 2022.
