Kenyans Advised Against Going to Saudi Arabia for Work

The Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Macharia Kamau, has recently spoken out about how Kenyan employees are treated in Saudi Arabia.

Kenyans Advised Against Going to Saudi Arabia for Work

He spoke in response to a recent event on how a 24-year-old Kenyan lady, Diana Chepkemoi was being mistreated by her employer.

Kenyans took to the internet to demand that the proper authorities act right away to make sure she returns home.

Since then, it has been reported that she is in safe hands and that plans are being made for her to return to her home.

According to the Saudi Arabia Embassy in Kenya, Chepkemoi is scheduled  to return home on the next available flight as her exit visa is being processed.

A Twitter user on Sunday questioned PS Macharia about why the government has never taken any action to address the mistreatment of Kenyan workers in the Gulf country despite the fact that such incidents appear to be happening more frequently.

PS Macharia promptly responded, asserting that Kenyans had continued to send this group of workers to Saudi Arabia despite repeated requests to stop sending such workers to the Gulf.

"Please. We have told Kenyans repeatedly to stop sending this category of workers to Saudi. You’ve chosen not to listen," the PS tweeted.

On Saturday, September 3, stories of the 24-year-old woman's mistreatment by her Saudi Arabian boss surfaced on social media, bringing attention to her suffering.

She appeared malnourished in the pictures shared on social media amid rumors that her employer had imprisoned her in the country.

The Saudi Embassy, however, refuted allegations that the young woman was being held by her Arab boss in a statement and claimed that Diana had a health condition.

The Saudi embassy also stated that they are dedicated to upholding everyone's human rights in the country.
