Matatus Will Not Be Allowed to Operate In The Nairobi CBD Starting April – NMS Says

According to the NMS transport and public works director Engineer Michael Ochieng, the changes are aimed to manage the public sector. He further added that Kenya must lead in the East African region in showing the world that it can manage its public sector.

The change we are making in terms of traffic to decongesting Nairobi has been done in other parts of the world and it must be done in Kenya too. We must take the lead in East Africa to show that we are able to manage their public transport,” Ochieng said.

According to NMS, the Green park, Desai and Park Road bus termini will start operating by the end of April this year.

Matatus that operate in Ngong, Lang’ata and Argwings Kodhek roads will be the first to be affected.

The Green park terminial which is 98% complete will accommodate between 300 and 350 vehicles at a go and up to 2000 vehicles in a day.

The Green park Terminal will serve matatus in Ngong, Karen, Kikuyu, Kibra, Kawangware, Highrise, Nairobi West, Makadara among other areas.

According to the NMS, touting will also be prohibited and the public will be guided by public address systems.

Passengers will be guided by a public address system and huge information boards already mounted at the park.” Ochieng added.

Also, security will be beeped in the parks and to also ensure transparency.

CCTVs installed will also help in not only securing the park but also in enhancing transparency. The time a vehicle arrives at the park and when it exits will be captured electronically,” Ochieng stated.
