Mob Sets 5 People Ablaze Over Rape Allegations

On Friday night, the five were attacked by an angry mob that set their house on fire, accusing them of rape. Witnesses claim that one of them had attacked a woman, tearing off her blouse and undergarments when a passerby intercepted him, rescuing the woman.

The offender managed to flee from the scene, hoping to find security in their house in Mawanga Estate, Nakuru, where he lived with his brothers.

But a mob had formed and followed him to the house, broke in, took him out, beat him nearly to death, and set their house on fire with petrol.

The victims denied the claims stating that the woman was the one who abused them, leading the mob to attack them.

One of them is in critical condition admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), while the other three are in the hospital, getting treatment on the burns. A nurse attending to the three confirmed that they were in a stable condition despite incurring high-degree burns.

“They sustained burn injuries ranging from 30-60 percent, and we are trying to manage the situation,” stated the nurse.

David Kuria, Nakuru Human Rights Network Director, condemned the incident terming it unacceptable and unfortunate. He further warned citizens from taking justice in

“A crime is a crime, and I regret what happened. I strongly condemn the arson incident, and I call upon all law enforcement agencies to move swiftly to investigate the matter,” he said.

Investigations are being done to identify the members of the mob.

“We have launched investigations into the incident, and we will arrest those involved in the ordeal,” said Elena Kabukuru, Nakuru East sub-county police.

The leader of the South Sudanese community in Nakuru County, Kut Maketh Duk, proded for investigations to be conducted and those who set the house ablaze arrested.

“I call on investigative agencies to move swiftly, investigate and arrest those involved in the arson attack. The incident is totally unacceptable and unfortunate,” Duk said.
