Nairobi Expressway Toll Charges To Be Revealed By KeNHA

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has revealed plans to revise toll charges levied on motorists using the Nairobi Expressway in advance of its official opening.

The authority rejected the toll charges that were circulating, supposedly for the 27-kilometer road project running from Mlolongo to Waiyaki Way.

KeNHA is currently working with various stakeholders to develop charges that will be used on the Ksh65 billion project, which will be announced during the launch.

The resolutions and recommendations reached following a stakeholder engagement forum will guide the entire pricing model for the road, which is expected to alleviate traffic congestion along Mombasa Road and Waiyaki Way.

According to previous reports, motorists would be charged between Ksh100 and Ksh300 depending on the distance traveled and the type of vehicle used. Unsubstantiated reports also claimed that motorists would be expected to pay Ksh12,000 per month to use the road, but KeNHA has refuted all of these claims.

The Nairobi Expressway will have 11 interchanges and 27 toll stations located throughout the elevated highway. The project is nearing completion, with the majority of the infrastructure already in place.

The road tickets will be purchased at the toll booths. Motorists will then be required to keep the same ticket, which will be scanned before they exit the road. Each toll station will have a toll attendant who will direct motorists on how to proceed once they are open to the public.

The Nairobi Expressway, which was built through a public-private partnership model, was supposed to open in March, but it is more likely that the date will be pushed back to allow for all of the necessary work to be completed.

However, before handing over the road to Kenya, China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) will operate it for 27 years to recover the costs spent on its construction.
