The Ex-Secretary General for Kenya National Union of Teachers, Hon Willson Sossion, continues to stand up for teachers amidst the effort by the parliament to terminate the Teachers Professional Development program.

Sossion Advocates For Teachers As Parliament Seeks To Stop TSC's New TPD Program

Speaking during a National Assembly sitting on Tuesday, September 28, the Nominated Member of Parliament maintained that the Teachers Service Commission should respect the rule of law and the rights of the teachers in Kenya.

The Teachers Service Commission had rolled out the Teachers Professional Development program which aims at offering in-service training programs for all practicing teachers.

The Commission had already contracted institutions that will be offering the refresher training program christened Teacher Professional Development modules.

The teachers were expected to meet the training costs for the modules that will be offered during school holidays at a rate of KSh6,000 per year. Of importance to note is the fact that the training will be mandatory for all practicing teachers.

The program, however, has suffered a major blow after an education consultant Joseph Ngethe Karanja moved to court to challenge it.

Karanja filed a petition in court Monday seeking orders to stop the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) from rolling out the program citing lack of public participation as provided under Article 232 of the Constitution.

According to Sossion, TSC is not Parliament that should make laws and implement them on their own.

Sossion and other petitioners continue to oppose the move stating it will only affect the financial situation of teachers.
