According to Indian news reports, the two were apprehended as soon as they arrived at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).

The two were discovered in possession of gold weighing 15.57kg and valued at Ksh113 million after traveling from Nairobi via Bole International Airports in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The cargo had been stowed away in custom-made pockets.

"This is a new route. The involvement of Kenyan nationals in gold smuggling is not very common, too," stated an official who was part of the arrest team.

One of the suspects confessed during questioning that this was not the first time he had smuggled gold into the South Asian country. He said he'd done it four times before and that his co-accused had never done it before.

An inquiry into the incident is still underway.

On November 24, 2021, Officers from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) busted a gold smuggling ring, arresting a group of 30 women accused of being involved.

According to KRA, a multi-agency team conducted a body search on the women and discovered 15 of them carrying 4.88 kg of unregistered gold and jewelry.

Customs officers believe the women on their way to Mumbai are linked to a smuggling effort thwarted in India two months ago involving three female travelers.

“Customs Officers stationed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) last night intercepted approximately 4.88 kilograms of gold and jewelry that was being smuggled after identifying a group of approximately 30 female Kenyan travelers who were departing from Nairobi to Mumbai, India through Doha,” the KRA had said.
