Joseph Kinyua Murimi, the prime suspect linked to the alleged murder of 24-year-old Velvine Nungari Kinyanjui has been released on a Ksh200,000 cash bail.

The directive was made by a Kiambu court that declined to allow the prosecution to detain Murimi for 30 more days.

Through a virtual hearing of the application, the prosecution had stated that it had not received reports from various government agencies in regard to the ongoing investigations.

Chief Magistrate Patricia Gichohi thus directed Murimi to be reporting at the Kiamumbi police station every Thursday of the week.

The matter will be mentioned on April 29 for further directions.

Velvine, the student from Kenyatta University, died on Tuesday, March 9 after she sustained severe beatings and rape. She was buried on Wednesday, March 17 at Sabasaba in Murang'a County.

Her death sparked a social media uproar, with many netizens calling for the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to respond to the matter, which they did.

CCTV footage on the night of Tuesday, February 23 showed the last moments between Velvine and Murimi at Sinnot Hotel where they would spend the night, and the clip showed them together, seemingly standing close to one another in a public display of affection, an indication that they knew each other well.
