Maina stated that at the time of the fire incident she was in a meeting with students in Form One and Two that afternoon adding that she had also invited guests to offer counseling to the students in a session organized by the school.

“I had a baraza with form one and form two from morning until around 2:30 pm where I had even invited counselors to talk to the students," she revealed.

She also revealed that it was after the session that one of her colleague approached her to break the bad news to her.

"A teacher approached me notifying me that one of the dormitories was on fire.

"A number of ambulances arrived at the school to ferry students to the hospital. So far, 59 students have been confirmed injured and are receiving treatment in the Metropolitan and Jamaa hospitals in Nairobi." She concluded.

The situation angered concerned parents on social media stating that the school lacked an Emergency fire exit gate as some students were seen on a viral video on Sunday about 6 pm dangling on windows trying to flee for security.

Other parents threatened to transfer their children from the school a move which wasn't well-received by the principal.

She asked parents not to take away their children from the school.

"I’m appealing to parents to allow the school to handle the situation because of security reasons outside the school. Be sure we are in control of the situation. We have enough security in the school and we want to handle the situation," she stated.
