Panic as four Radio Stations Looted in South Africa

Demonstrators and looters in South Africa attacked at least four community radio stations overnight, robbed and assaulted journalists covering believe to be covering the unrest over the past 10 days.

 The four radio stations that were looted include:
• Alex FM, in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg
• Mams Radio, In Mamelodi, northeast of Pretoria
• West Side FM, in Kagiso, west of Johannesburg
• Intokozo FM, in Durban
According to Alex FM station manager Mr. Takalane Nemangowe, the attackers vandalized the station and “stripped the radio station of everything and only left papers.” He also added that a presenter and a security guard who were in the building at the time were able to escape unharmed.


In addition, unknown goons vandalized Mams Radio’s transmitter, studios, and offices, and stole equipment from the station, according to a statement by the outlet, reviewed by CPJ. The station noted its fans that it was “off-air until further notice” but the matter was left for the police to intervene.


West Side FM CEO Goodhope Ledwaba also said that looters had broken the doors and windows of the station’s office and stolen broadcasting equipment, including computers.
This comes at a time Intokozo FM also posted photos on its Facebook account showing vandalism in its studios.
