Energy Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma suggested more fines against oil marketing businesses that were complicit in the country's fuel shortfall after meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The government's actions come a day after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced that oil marketing companies were selling petroleum intended for the Kenyan market outside the country.

Four oil marketing organizations are expected to face fines, including a reduction in the amount of capacity they import into the country.

Furthermore, the government is claimed to have put measures in action to increase national oil's capacity in order to avoid future crises, as well as to play a larger role in the furl retail business.

The sanctions come as Kenyans continue to suffer as a result of their inability to obtain fuel. Long lines formed outside of gas stations, spilling onto major highways as Kenyans rushed to fill up their tanks.

Hundreds of vehicles queued the roads to see how little fuel they could acquire, with several gas stations prohibiting motorists to buying only Ksh.1,000 worth of petrol.

The issue spread throughout the country, with some people deciding to cross the border into Tanzania in order to obtain fuel.

EPRA is set to release its monthly prices today, with many Kenyans hoping that this will put an end to the fuel shortage in the country.
