According to Sonko, the ban came a day after he announced that he would defend his gubernatorial seat in the coming elections.

Why is this coming out a day after I said that I'll be defending my seat on August? Why are the biggest known thieves of COVID-19 and KEMSA are being spared and they're the ones who've committed the biggest corruption scandals in the country," Sonko said on his statement.

Speaking hours after the ban, Sonko said that he received the news with shock adding that most of the cases against him are still in court, not yet determined and therefore the ban was not justified.

Sonko further added that his family members have never benefitted from any tender during his tenure in office.

“None of my family members was ever awarded any tender by the county when I was in office and it's in the public domain, the embassy should come out publicly and tell Kenyans the truth. My wife and kids have never supplied even a spoon or toilet paper to city hall either directly or indirectly,” Sonko said.

Sonko also went on to indicate that some high-profile leaders in the country were also facing corruption cases and none of them received such punishments that were meted against him and his family.

The US, through its Department of state had issued a travel ban on Sonko and his immediate family on travelling to the US citing high level corruption cases against the former governor during his tenure in office.
