Wetangula Supports CS Matiang’i’s Directive on Dadaab & Kakuma Closure

Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula has backed interior cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi by stating that the directive he issued to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees {UNHCR} on the closure of Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps is a good move.

Mr. Wetangula added that even though the move was quite fantastic, but two weeks was unrealistic and unachievable to send about 500000 refugees back to their original countries.

He however proposed that 6 months would work effectively on ensuring that all the refugees evacuated both Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps.

The intended closure of Kakuma and Dadaab refugee camps is laudable. However, the two-week dateline to evacuate over 500000 refugees to countries of origin or 3rd countries is unrealistic unreasonable, and unachievable. Perhaps 6 months will suffice,” tweeted the Bungoma Senator.

This comes at a time Interior CS Fred Matiang'i  On Wednesday,24th  issued a 14-day ultimatum to the United Nations High Commissioner of Refugees (UNHCR), to provide a road map for the definite closure of Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps.

In Matiangi`s letter to UNHCR representative to Kenya Fadhilaa Addala he raised security concerns over the two camps.

"There is no room for negotiation. We must strike a balance between Kenya’s international obligation and her domestic duties. We do have a domestic responsibility to protect Kenya," the letter read in part.
