IEBC registered 1.5 million New Voters in a Month-Long Registration Exercise

In a statement by Chairman, Wafula Chebukati on Tuesday, the new voters account for only 25.3 percent, of the targeted six million eligible voters.

"During the ECVR exercise, the Commission enrolled a total of 1,519,294 new voters out of the projected target of approximately 6,000,000 eligible voters, being 25.3% of the target," he said on Tuesday.

Chebukati added that another 421,057 registered voters applied to transfer from their previous registration centers to new ones.

The ECVR exercise began on October 4 and ended on November 5, 2021.

Nairobi, Nakuru, Kiambu, Kakamega, and Kisii are the counties that recorded the highest number of new voters, while Lamu, Isiolo, Samburu, Laikipia, and Tana River recorded the least number of new voters.

IEBC will now move to the next face which is the reduplication process to remove any multiple records.

The electoral body also announced the beginning of registration for Kenyan citizens in the diaspora in December 2021.

"The Commission plans to conduct voter registration for citizens residing outside the country for a period of fifteen (15) days from 6th to 20th December 2021," Chebukati said.

"Prior to the commencement of the exercise, the Commission will publish in the Kenya Gazette the names of registration centers and countries in which registration and voting are scheduled to take place and the period of registration."

Chebukati added that Continuous voter registration has resumed at IEBC constituency offices and will continue until when a gazette notice will be published to allow for biometric verification of the voter register.
