Inflation Rate Goes Up to 5.69% in January

According to the reports by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), the inflation rate rose from 5.62% in December last year to 5.69% in January 2021.

This year’s January inflation rate is however lower compared to last year at the same time which was 5.68%.

Statistics released by the Consumer Price Index show the transport prices in Kenya rose by 1.07% as compared to December and the prices rose by 14.24% compared to January 2020.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) reads, “Transport index increased by 1.07 percent over the same period mainly due to a rise of 4.94 percent and 0.15 percent in the retail prices of diesel and petrol, respectively.”

Other commodities like non-alcoholic beverages and food prices rose by 7.36% in January 2021 as compared to January last year.

The prices of salad cooking oil, bread, and cabbages went by 10.40%, 6.55%, and 3.39% respectively.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 0.63% from December’s 111.87 to 112.58 in January.
