KPLC Cautions Kenyans Against Purchasing Tokens From Kiosks

The power company announced on Tuesday, August 30, that it had only approved three paybill numbers, a number of banks, and the USSD code *977#.

Customers can purchase prepaid tokens by using the M-Pesa Paybill number 888880, M-Pesa Paybill number 888888 for post-paid and M-Pesa Paybill 888899 for new connections.

"We wish to inform our prepaid and postpaid customers that, effective Thursday, September 1, 2022, the purchase of prepaid tokens and payment of postpaid bills will only be made through the following (above-mentioned) authorised channels.” part of the statement read.

The company further advised customers against making the purchase through unaffiliated agents including kiosks.

"Please note that no other third-party agent is authorised to offer these services on behalf of KPLC. The company will therefore not take liability for any transaction conducted through any other platform,” the statement cautioned.

The new modifications are anticipated to lessen delays in token generation and postpaid bill payments that were brought on by technical difficulties that customers previously encountered.

In addition, KPLC is working on an advanced technology that will allow Kenyans to share tokens with their neighbors or friends who are using the pre-paid option.

Tenants will be able to relocate with their tokens to new locations when changing houses.

KPLC has already conducted tests in various areas of Nairobi, and it is anticipated that the project will be implemented nationwide.
