The President has forwarded Philip Mpango’s name to the parliament for approval. According to the Tanzanian constitution, the new vice president has to be approved by at least 50 % of the MPs.

The Tanzanian constitution says that the vice presidency vacancy has to be filled within 14 days from when it falls vacant, which means President Samia Suluhu has until Friday to fill in the position.

Philip Mpango has been the Finance minister since March 2015 where he has also held the position of acting commissioner-general of the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA). The minister has also held a position as the executive secretary in the office of the President (Planning Commission).

Mpango was also the deputy permanent secretary at the Ministry of Finance & Economic Affairs, the personal assistant to the president (economic affairs), the head of the President's Economic Advisory Unit, and the senior economist for the World Bank.
