Rescue Operations at Nithi Bridge Called Off

Police have halted rescue efforts at Tharaka Nithi's Nithi Bridge, following the Sunday accident that claimed the lives of 35 people.

Evans Achoki, the Eastern regional commissioner, said in a statement early on Tuesday that all 45 people on the bus at the time of the accident had been identified and that they had therefore completed the rescue efforts.

He claimed that on Monday, the bus's wreckage was removed from the river.

Achoki reported that among the ten victims rescued from the accident, those who were in severe condition were being treated at Chuka County Referral Hospital.

The Modern Coast bus was leaving Meru Town for Mombasa when the incident happened to lead to the death of 35 people on Sunday, July 24

It is reported that the breaks failed, causing the bus to lose control and plunge into the Tharaka Nithi River.

Following the horrific incident at Nithi Bridge the National Transport and Safety Authority(NTSA) banned all Modern Coast bus operations nationwide.
